Concept
The Acute Stroke Unit is based in the Department of Neurology at the
Institute of Neurological Sciences, which is part of the Southern
General Hospital, Glasgow. It is run by 7 Consultants and serves a
local population of 300 000 but also accepts regional referrals from
other hospitals throughout the West of Scotland.
We have a 4 bedded High Dependency Unit, through which all Acute Stroke
Patients are initially treated. Patients are subsequently transferred
to 30 bedded Stroke Ward, which caters for both the acute medical and
rehabilitation requirements of our patients.
The unit has a strong emphasis on both acute and rehabilitation care.
There is a focus on the early administration of thrombolytic therapy
which is facilitated by acute multi-modal imaging. There is a strong
rehabilitation team consisting who also facilitate supported discharge.
In addition, there is a strong commitment to research within the
University of Glasgow.
