Concept
Our Cerebrovascular Unit begun its activity in October 2003 and is leaded by Dr. J. Machado Cândido, Head of the Neurology Department, with the present coordination of Dr. João Alcântara.
This Unit was specially created for the management of acute stroke
patients. It is structured according to the EUSI recommendations and
has 8 beds. Specially trained nursing and medical teams work in the
Unit, including Neurologists, Internal Medicine specialists,
Neurorradiologists and Rehabilitation specialists. Since its opening
about 1100 patients have been taken care of; 120 intravenous and 60
intra-arterial thrombolytic treatments have been performed.
According to the close cooperation established with the
Neurorradiology department, particular competence has been developed in
the endovascular treatment of patients with acute ischemic stroke,
atherosclerotic carotid disease, cerebral venous thrombosis and
cerebral aneurism.
Beyond this clinical work, our Unit has been participating in
several clinical and epidemiologic trials within the scope of stroke
Research Projects – Overview
Our department is currently participating in several trials in the
following areas: stroke epidemiology and etiopathogenesis, secundary
prevention and acute phase treatment of ischemic stroke.
