Concept

The stroke unit of the department of Neurology of the University of Ulm has been founded and primarily certified as a main center of stroke care in 1999 with a catchment population of around 500.000 people. As admission numbers have been constantly growing over the last years the department was expanded in 2005. Actually the facility covers 16 fully monitored beds and comprehends all aspects of modern stroke care like a 24 hour MRI imaging unit and the possibility for neurosurgical as well as neurointerventional procedures. An additional ambulatory for outclinic patients has been established in 2003. The department is constantly involved in several international multicenter trials of acute stroke treatment as well as secondary prophylaxis of ischemic stroke.
