Concept
The Department of Neurology at the Charité Campus Benjamin Franklin is nationally and internationally recognized as a centre of excellence in neurology. The department has a particular interest and expertise in research and management of stroke patients. Acute stroke patients – about 1000 per year – are treated in the certified Stroke Unit. Several clinical studies have established the superiority of stroke unit treatment over conventional care. The unit includes 8 monitored beds. A sizable percentage of patients are treated with thrombolysis within 3 hours of stroke onset. There is a close cooperation with several basic and clinical research groups in the department ensuring comprehensive patient care. Our team has participated in several clinical stroke studies.
In December 2007 a 3 Tesla-MRI (Siemens MAGNETOM TIM TRIO) was installed in the immediate vicinity of the Stroke Unit on the 4th floor of the Charité Campus Benjamin Franklin. This facility enables our department to diagnose every stroke patient with a state-of-the-art MRI.
The central office of the Competence Network Stroke (CNS), which has been funded in 1999 by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), is located at the Charité (Leading Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Arno Villringer). This support facilitated the conduction of several multicenter trials within the network and led to the establishment of a stroke trial team. The team includes specifically trained neurologists and study assistants. The set up of our team allows the conduction of clinical trials in an efficient and high-quality manner and leads to high recruiting numbers.
Further support for the research activities is expected by the establishment of the Center for Stroke Research Berlin (CSB), which will be an integrated research and treatment sponsored by the BMBF from June 1st 2008. This Center will create an attractive environment for top-rate clinical research and will help us to achieve an even higher quality in patient-oriented research. Within the CSB a trial team will be established that will provide the expertise and active support for planning and executing stroke studies.
