Neurology Antwerp

Concept

At the ZNA Middelheim Hospital in Antwerp we aim to provide the best possible care for stroke victims and to conduct fundamental and clinical research at a high level.

For treatment of patients with acute stroke, a dedicated multidisciplinary stroke team and a stroke unit are available around the clock.

With regard to stroke research, we have two main fields of interest. In the Middelheim’s Interdisciplinary Stroke Study we evaluate the predictive value of clinical, biochemical, electrophysiological, and neuroimaging parameters for acute ischemic stroke.   Further, we have a special interest in Fabry’s disease. In the Middelheim’s Fabry Study (MiFaS), we retrospectively evaluated the prevalence of Fabry’s disease in young patients with cryptogenic stroke. This project has been expanded to a prospective multi-center study on a national level, called the Belgian Fabry Study (BeFaS).
