Following a 2005 study published in the Lancet that described the prevalence of Fabry disease in young cryptogenic stroke patients, the Sifap
network (Stroke In Young Fabry Patients) has been designed to provide
more data on the association between Fabry disease and stroke in young
patients. A preliminary seven month pilot phase involving some 700
patients allowed the research team to establish the proof-of-principle,
and the Sifap network, a multicentre study headed by the University of
Rostock in Germany, officially launched in January 2008.
